This is a shoji, a wooden frame covered with paper, of the size of the window, in between are positioned bamboo curtains to lower more the light, that draw a grear shadow on the white paper. In traditional Japanese houses there always low light. The great Japanese writer Tanizaki Junichiro wrote "In Praise of Shadows" where explain beautifully the Japanese aestetics of shadows and darkness.
